Wordplay is a literary method that has been used for hundreds of years to make literary pieces more interesting. The deifinition of Wordplay is a witty or wise saying, or a play on words. Wordplay can be used in many different ways so it never gets old! There many different examples of wordplay which include, diction, syntax, lexicon, personification, alliteration, assonance and many more. Depending on how wordplay is used in a literary piece it may have different effects.
I believe that authors use wordplay to make their literary pieces seem more enjoyable to read. In the story Alice's Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, Carroll uses many different types of wordplay to get different effects. For example in Chapter 7 "A Mad Tea-Party" the Dormouse tells a STORYat the table. The story is a parody (a mock of another story orperson or thing) of The Three Little Pigs, but here it is about three sisters that live in the bottom of a well. The reason i think that Lewis Carroll put this in the story is to make it funny and basically just show of her styles of wordplay. Other writters that use wordplay are A. A. Milne who used word play in his poem In The Dark By A. A. Milne. In his poem In The Dark, he use's repitition (words or phrases are repeated) very much, he repeats, "had my" and "i had" and "i can" and many other lines or phrases. By doing this he is emphasizing on what his thoughts are to drill it into the reader's head making it easier to follow. There is also assonance (repition of vowel sounds within sentences) being used in this peom. Milne is reapeating the word or vowel sounds "I". By doing so it is empowering the author into his own work. This way people may know that the peom is about him. This peom may appeal to many reader's with the ability to comprehend things well and who understand wordplay and how it works.
